The Truth about REIKI!

Reiki is a beautiful, wonderful and non-invasive energy remedial treatment that operates holistically; on the body as a whole, psyche, and spirit. Reiki is not a religious system, yet it has a lot to do with one’s spirituality. There are no sacred affiliations to Reiki, but you must have some belief in God, Higher Self, Universe, and Nature to be a vessel of this superb energy transference. Reiki merely is a calming and soothing treatment, where a Reiki practitioner uses their hands to transfers natural healing vibrations to the receiver.

Reiki treatments help relieves stress and pain, induces relaxation, releases emotional blockages and accelerates the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Reiki is also known to help balance out the bodies ingenious energies and is used to assist other medical modalities including conventional therapies.

What is Reiki?

Reiki’s’ basic concept is that the body is an energy field, it is responsible for proper functioning of glands and organs, it also used to aid the balance of our emotional and spiritual well-being. The main ideas are that the energy flow that travels throughout the body can become obstructed or debilitated causing illness, fatigue, and emotional imbalances.

Though Reiki can be done by everyone and has been done by many naturally, there are three levels of Reiki that require attunement.

Attunement 1: The first degree, it includes an overview of the history of Reiki, teaches hand placements, how to perform Reiki for yourself and others.

Attunement 2: Second degree, level 2 attunement requires the completion of the first attunement. This level allows the Reiki Practitioner to unlock and connect to the universal force of energy as well as pull the eminences from the representation of the symbols given to the Reiki Practitioner. The level 2 attunement, tunes the practitioner to provide healing to other individuals, from a distance no matter where they are. The principle of the Reiki practice is the same as prayer; the person doesn’t have to be in the same room for it to be beneficial.

Attunement 3: Third Degree, Reiki Master, this level allows the Practitioner, to teach and transfer healing energy to others for practice. It is also a commitment that you will dedicate, honor and respect the tradition. Allowing the maximum flow of healing power to connect with you.

The Reiki practice instills that everyone can access the universal life energy and that sometimes people can become blocked. A Reiki Practitioner is taught to perceive and sense the blockages.

Once the Reiki practitioner detects the blockages, he or she will use their hands, accepted the wisdom and their energetic bio-field to improve energy flow in the recipient. No one is sure how Reiki works in biological, it is considered one of the more mysterious practices. I honestly believe from my practice of Reiki, that it has a lot to do with the 7 Chakras since we are starting from the Crown Chakra down to the Root Chakra to the floor, infusing our healing energy through every endocrine gland and every nerve in the body.

The International Center for Reiki Training has estimated that 4,000,000 people throughout the world have taken at least one level of Reiki training. There are three traditional levels of expertise (greenlotus). Today, Reiki education is offered free of charge in more than 800 American Hospitals as a means to accelerate the healing process and to alleviate pain (greenlotus). Some of the hospitals that I am familiar with that have integrated into their conventional medicine practices are Columbia University Center of Integrative Therapies, New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia Univ. Medical Center Campus, and Duke Integrative Medicine, these hospitals are prestigious due to their outstanding development of medicine and the essential services they offer to the community.

History of Reiki

Scholar of Religion, Dr. Mikoa Usui, was a Japanese man who developed Reiki practice. Reiki was developed by Mikao Usui in Japan in the 1920s as a spiritual practice (Micozzi 137). The story that was passed down through Reiki Practitioners is that Dr. Usui was a Christian man who was enthused with the idea that Jesus Christ can heal the sick by laying has on them. He searched for clues that may reveal the secrets of healing with your hands.

Dr. Usui, traveled around the world studying many types of religions, reading much ancient literature dating back 10,000 years from Tibet. During this intense research, Dr. Usui claimed he experienced spiritual enlightenment. Which helped him exercise healing with his hands, causing him to be more aware and giving him the ability to tap into the universal life force

would explain the secrets of healing with hands, Usui made a long pilgrimage around the world, visiting many ancient religious sects and studying old books. Some reiki teachers claim that Usui found clues leading back nearly 10,000 years of healing arts that originated in ancient Tibet. During his intense studies, Usui claimed he had a spiritual experience, which enabled him to heal with his own hands by becoming aware of and tapping into the universal life force. Once he was able to master the Reiki practice, he dedicated himself to those in need, the sick and the poor. Dr. Usui became a reputable man due to his life’s work, before passing away he passed his healing wisdom of universal life energy to Dr. Hayashi. After that, he dedicated his life to helping the sick and needy. Then Dr. Hayashi, in 1938 trained a Japanese woman from Hawaii that he had cured of chronic illness that threatened her life. After Takata was healed, she became a firm believer in the healing techniques in 1938 to Hawayo Takata, a Japanese woman from Hawaii, whom he had cured of life-threatening illness using reiki methods.

Takata became a firm believer and follower of Reiki, and in 1970 she founded a program to train Reiki Masters conserving the teachings left behind by Dr. Usui's. Takata personally taught 21 people while preparing her granddaughter, Phyllis Lei Furumoto, to continue the lineage. Along with other Reiki masters authorized by Takata, Furumoto formed the Reiki Alliance. A faction led by Barbara Ray formed the American Reiki Association, which was known as Radiance Technique Association International (medical dictionary), which the methods of practice can be traced all the way back to Dr. Usui.

Most Reiki Practitioners are not licensed, medical professionals. Only medical professionals are allowed to provide a diagnosis for their patient; I prefer to state to each receiving client that I am the vessel, I am just to give comfort and will is not our own if not from of higher being, God, Universe whichever belief system they may have.

We as Reiki Practitioners are not allowed issue a diagnosis, claim we cure, prevent disease; we are vessels of the supportive healing energy given to us from above. Though while we are practicing Reiki, we are more susceptible and can discern our client's state of mind and physical ailments. For example, if a person is carrying a heavy heart we feel or noticed changes in breath, anger, resentment or even sadness, but we are not allowed to discuss those emotions with the client, it is illegal, and the receiver of Reiki may translate as such, a diagnosis.

Another reason not discuss what we feel or discern in the client because we do not know how the healing energy force is circulating within them. We do not know if the feeling of anger, resentment, sadness is not part of the healing process. We are not the creators of beings, just the vessels of transference. Only the receiver knows what they are feeling, and they have to reach their enlightenment, finding their wisdom and answers within to enrich their lives.

The Five Reiki Principles by Dr. Usui

These are several affirmations that Dr. Usui developed to help maintain our energies balanced and avoid blockages of energy flow.

  1. Just for today, I will not be angry (reikiforholistichealth.com)- Dr. Usui has shown us that being agree can cause blockages in energy flow. Anger can cause serious health issues in your body, causing gastrointestinal disorders, emotional imbalances, cardiovascular disease, insomnia just to name a few. Its best just to let go of anger, my mother used to tell me “you are sitting here angry and they are out there enjoying their lives.” It didn’t make sense at first, but I believe that anger can cause more harm than good and the person who made you angry is probably oblivious or is not worth the aggravation. Just let the anger go!

  2. Just for today, I will not worry(reikiforholistichealth.com)-Dr. Usui developed this principle for the over worries, why worry about the future, we are not in charge of our destiny. Though being prepared for the future may not be an awful thing, but it can call in negative energy. There is a bible verse that I hold near and dear, “don’t worry about tomorrows trouble because today has enough of its own.” I think we need to handle life one step at a time, having faith that everything will be ok we do not know what tomorrow brings.

  3. Just for today, I will be grateful (reikiforholistichealth.com)- Counting your blessings is a blessing in itself. By being grateful, you bring positive intention into life itself flourishing from the inner and reflecting on the outer. Being thankful exercises the muscles of the spirit, encouraging forgiveness and happiness in our lives.

  4. Just for today, I will do my work honestly (reikiforholistichealth.com)-honesty is also another muscle of the spirit, being honest in everything you and not causing harm to others relieves the consciousness. It allows you to connect with other socially and spiritually, develop genuine relationships.

  5.  Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing (reikiforholistichealth.com)- being kind sometimes can be a difficult task in today’s world, but I believe that you can benefit more spiritually and physical by being kind. If we treat others with the same treatment we will like to be treated; this world will be a better place. A smile, a gesture, motivating words, can provide healing to someone who needs it, can stop conflict and it can even save a life.

Treatment Principles

The standard treatment of Reiki consists of energy flow deriving from the practitioners’ hand into the receiving client. Usually, you will the client is either sitting on the chair with feet flat on the floor or laying down on a massage table or hospital bed.

The receiving individual maintains clothes fully while the practitioner places their hands near the clients as if they were shadowing the chakras, motioning and positioning their hands near the shoulders and feet as well. Hand positioning will also depend on what the receivers’ needs are that day, for instance, if the receiver has a kidney infection, either your perception or the client will indicate where the Reiki flow is most needed.

Every Reiki position is held from three to ten minutes; the Reiki practitioner will be able to perceive the need in each area. Every Reiki treatment is different the duration of each session can last from 45 to 90 minutes depending on the intensity of energy blockage.

Common Treated Conditions

Reiki, provides support for any individual as a whole, for emotional imbalances and disease. Reiki of healing is a non-invasive treatment, any individual in need of healing will benefit from Reiki. The beauty of this healing life force is that it provides support to each as a whole.

Many have used this modality for emotional imbalances, infertility, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and chronic pain. Reiki has been used for post-surgery recovery to accelerate the healing process and for hospice patients to provide them comfort.

Since Reiki is safe for any condition, age, gender and even if you are taking medication, it has been incorporated into many of the conventional practices today.

Reiki Research Studies & Outcomes

For many years Reiki was discounted as a deceptive practice by medical associations, practitioners, mainstream scientists and members of the church, my grandmother was one of the ministers that believed it was bogus as well until I explained how Reiki worked and how it was similar to prayer. I explained energy healing is related to prayer because it gives the body what it needs not what the person desires, like when we ask God to do his will when we petition him for something. Faith in your spirituality has a lot to do with the outcomes of any Holistic practice, regardless of religion.

While researching the Reiki Studies, I found several which credited the Reiki practice for positively affecting patients in diverse areas. A study explained the effects of Reiki therapy for pain and anxiety management for the patients that attended the oncology and infusion services unit in SC Oncologia Medica, San Giovanni Battista Hospital, Turin, Italy. This investigation proved that using Reiki for management of anxiety and pain decrease its symptoms.

The hospital performing this pilot project conducted between the years of 2003 and 2005, was for patients that had cancer at any stage and receiving chemotherapy. Before every Reiki session, each patient personal and clinical data were collected and recorded for evaluation.

The hospital is providing the research using a Visual Analog Scale, together with the patients’ description of physical feelings to record the pain and anxiety scores before and after each 30-minute session of Reiki. All 118 patients received at least 1 Reiki treatment (total number, 238). In the subgroup of 22 patients who underwent the full cycle of 4 treatments, the mean VAS anxiety score decreased from 6.77 to 2.28 (P <.000001) and the mean VAS pain score from 4.4 to 2.32 (P = .091), (ihwreiki.com).This studied showed that Reiki sessions were helpful in improving the patients’ quality of life, improving their well-being, promoting relaxation, pain relief, help decrease sleep disorders and help ease anxiety symptoms. The research concluded that offering Reiki therapy in hospitals can benefit patients, increasing the response to the physical and emotional needs of said patients with continuous use of Reiki.

The second study I found was Daniel Wirth’s Study; he led a tightly controlled experiment involving the Reiki technique of healing. He gathered 44 male college students who had received indistinguishable minor injuries, purposely created by a doctor on the right or left shoulder. 23 of the males did receive Reiki by the other 21 did not, they were given treatments in a way that the placebo effect cannot be declared. They told the students to put their arms through a hole in the wall, while a trained healer in the other room administered Reiki from a distance and there were others that did not receive Reiki. The groups were separated without any knowledge if there was anyone in the other room. The students and the doctors who administered the wounds evaluated their healing rates; it wasn't exposed that the experiment was based on healing energy but on electrical conductivity. All 44 students were given 8 to 16-day follow-up to measure how quickly the wounds were healing. After eight days, the treated group's injuries had shrunk 93.5 percent compared with 67.3 percent for those not treated. After sixteen days, the figures were 99.3 and 90.9. After debriefing, the students stated they did not know the true nature of the experiment and had felt no contact with the healer. The possibility that expectations of the students caused the healing was ruled out (reiki.org).

The third study was to evaluate the effect the Reiki may have in a Clinical Practice, in this research summary it indicates that they did not find any positive impact for patients who suffered from anxiety, stress and Diabetic Neuropathy. The searches identified 205 potentially relevant studies. Nine randomized clinical trials (RCTs) met our inclusion criteria. Two RCTs suggested beneficial effects of Reiki compared with sham control on depression, while one RCT did not report intergroup differences. For pain and anxiety, one RCT showed intergroup differences compared with sham control. For stress and hopelessness, a further RCT reported effects of Reiki and distant Reiki compared with remote sham control. For functional recovery after ischemic stroke, there were no intergroup differences compared with sham. There was also no difference for anxiety between groups of pregnant women undergoing amniocentesis. For diabetic neuropathy, there were no effects of Reiki on pain. A further RCT failed to show the results of Reiki for anxiety and depression in women undergoing breast biopsy compared with conventional care (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov).

As a firm believer in Alternative Therapies, I believe these studies made in regards to the effectiveness of the Reiki practice to be biased. Reiki is a biofield therapy that is difficult to prove its effectiveness if not under a strictly controlled research environment.

We are all vessels; we have to use the gift given to us and continuing to explore the universe and be grateful for the Gifts that the Lord our God has given us.
